Methoxsalen 20 mg Tablets
MORLEN 20
Methoxsalen belongs to the psoralen group of drugs, whose main application is in the management of skin diseases like psoriasis. Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition involving the excessive growth of skin cells, which results in reddish, scaly, and itchy patches on the skin. It may also impart color to other parts of the body, the hair among them. This condition is not infectious but may severely affect the quality of life of the individuals involved. Methoxsalen functions by sensitizing the skin to ultraviolet (UV) light, thereby relieving some of the symptoms of psoriasis and other conditions.
Protection Against UV Radiation:
One of the major advantages of Methoxsalen is its capacity to safeguard the skin against destructive ultraviolet radiation. When administered prior to sun or artificial light exposure, Methoxsalen enhances the tolerance of skin to UV rays. This shield function is important for individuals who have psoriasis since UV therapy is one of the most frequently used treatments that can minimize the severity of their condition.
Decrease in White Blood Cell Count:
Methoxsalen is immunosuppressive in nature, meaning it decreases the count of white blood cells in the body. This decrease is helpful since psoriasis is characterized by an excessive immune reaction. With its ability to modulate the immune system, Methoxsalen decreases inflammation and the accelerated turnover of skin cells, hence improving the appearance of psoriatic lesions.
Combination Therapy:
Methoxsalen is usually used together with phototherapy (PUVA therapy), whereby the drug is taken and the patient then receives UV light exposure. It has been established to be helpful in treating severe to moderate psoriasis, reducing itching and scaling while healing the skin.
Prior to initiating Methoxsalen, some precautions need to be taken into account:
Prescription Requirement: Methoxsalen must be taken strictly under the supervision of a doctor. Self-administration can result in severe side effects and complications.
Proper Dosage: Following the recommended dosage and schedule is important. Excessive intake of Methoxsalen may raise the risk of side effects, and inadequate intake might make the treatment ineffective.
Sun Exposure: Patients need to be careful regarding sun exposure during treatment with Methoxsalen. Though the drug provides protection against UV radiation, overexposure can still cause skin damage. Using sunscreen and protective gear when going outside is recommended.
Regular Monitoring: Regular follow-ups with the treating physician must be maintained by patients on Methoxsalen to check for response to treatment and control any side effects.
Other Conditions to be Considered: Individuals with a history of skin cancer, liver disease, or other major medical conditions must bring this up with their physician prior to the initiation of Methoxsalen since these may affect the appropriateness of treatment.
